Fluid flowing past a cylindrical structure can change the way it moves upon contact with the cylinder. Abrupt changes in their dynamics occur through transitions and can elicit a response from the cylinder through oscillations and larger air resistance, amongst other responses, which may be detrimental to engineering structures if overlooked or underestimated. This thesis investigates the causes of such transitions when the cylinder presents sharp corners to- or is asymmetrically aligned with the flow. The results here demonstrates when such transitions may occur and the fast transition to wake turbulence thereafter, and how the structure might react to it.
