This thesis examines the size segregation phenomenon in the piling, hopper filling and discharging processes, and the application in a paul-wurth hopper by discrete element method. It clarifies the underlying mechanisms of segregation by the microscopic parameters, including velocity, porosity and forces obtained from the simulation. These four processes are analysed comprehensively. The effects of material property, moisture content, size ratio and volume fraction are investigated. At last, several correlations are proposed to reveal the structural characteristics.
