New Generation Learning Environments is the term used to describe a new classroom typology that has developed on university campuses over the last twenty years, enabling more effective teaching and learning processes. This thesis explores the evolution of these new classrooms by examining the nexus of education theory and environmental psychology to identify appropriate spatial characteristics that support effective teaching and learning. A key output of the research is an evaluation tool that can be applied to any classroom environment, to measure how well suited the physical environment is for implementing effective teaching and learning.
