Cellulose can be processed into biodegradable and biocompatible hydrogels via a chemical reaction. These gels were produced and characterised to understand how they form in order to engineer them for applications. Low-density foams were produced from these hydrogels and demonstrated superabsorbent properties. Moreover, the gels were also utilised in biomedical applications as a medium for the separation of molecular mixtures. This work demonstrates the potential of cellulose-based gels to be a commercialised sustainable and renewable nanomaterial.
