This thesis details the development of a new computational tool for simulating gas flows around black holes. Using this tool, it investigates the shredding of stars by supermassive black holes due to extreme tidal forces and the subsequent light that is emitted. It confirms a model that has been proposed to explain puzzling properties of optical and ultra-violet emission in such events, which have been observed at the centres of galaxies.
