The aim of this research is to bring together and analyse available records (both 19th century and modern) of the languages of the Victorian Aborigines who lived in the region shown diagrammatically as A, B, C, D, and E on Map 2, and more specifically in Maps 3 - 7.
Because at the time of research there were no longer any living fluent speakers of these languages and dialects and no detailed maps of the tribal areas had been drawn before, much time has had to be devoted to seeking-out and piecing together 19th century records, many of which have lain scattered in libraries and archives in Victoria and other States.
