Evaluation of evidence-based infrastructure for safer cycling
thesis
posted on 2019-02-20, 22:43 authored by STEPHEN PAUL O'HERNThis thesis presents an innovative approach to investigating cycling infrastructure and thereby addressing some of the most frequent and high severity mid-block collision types that occur within urban road environments throughout Australia. The centrepiece of this thesis, that represents a unique and significant contribution to the field of road safety research, is the development and validation of a purpose-built bicycle simulator, designed specifically for the task of evaluating on-road infrastructure design concepts. The research presented in the later chapters utilised simulator-based research methods to investigate cycling infrastructure designs selected to address high priority and common cyclist crash types in Australia.
