In this doctoral work, many techniques have been purposed to understand the nanostructures of vanadium oxides and their applications. The VO2 thermochromic smart window is the major application studied in this thesis. VO2 nanostructures have been studied as thin films and nanoparticles by both experimental and theoretical methods. Scalable and cost-effective fabrication techniques have been developed for the VO2 smart windows with the strong solar modulating ability and high transparency. Inspired by the transformation properties of vanadium-based materials, multifunctional flexible sensors have been developed to separate the overlapped signals.
