Medicines which are able to relax prostatic smooth muscle are the most effective agents at relieving the lower urinary tract symptoms. C. speciosus has been used in folklore medicine by Sarawak natives to treat urological disorders. Therefore, the aims for this study are to assess the effectiveness of C. speciosus, in treating urological disorders by investigating their effects on nerve mediated contractility of isolated rat prostates. Isolation and identification of bioactive components may become useful in the development of novel pharmacotherapeutic agents for treating symptoms associated with BPH.
