Interstitial fibrosis is a type of scar tissue seen in biopsy samples that signifies the presence of chronic kidney diseases. A major challenge in the evaluation of kidney biopsy samples for interstitial fibrosis is the variability between doctors and the demand on specialised labour. This research successfully developed a computer system that automatically measures the amount of interstitial fibrosis in kidney biopsy tissues using computer vision techniques. An improved consistency and accuracy between pathologist diagnoses was observed when the proposed computerised quantification system was incorporated into the diagnosis process.
