High blood pressure is a major cause of heart disease. Strikingly, many patients with this disease are not treated effectively by current blood pressure lowering drugs, highlighting the need to find more effective therapies to treat this disease. Research in our group has shown that B cells, a major cell type of the immune system is important in this disease. This thesis examines the role of key proteins of the immune system in switching on B cells during this disease (B cell activating factor) or are ways by which B cells could contribute to high blood pressure (antibodies and complement).
