An Acculturative Perspective to Effective Leadership: Chinese Immigrant Professionals in Australia

Chinese Immigrant Professionals (CIPs) are growing in size and influence in the culturally diverse Australian workforce, yet their leadership views in relation to their acculturation experiences have remained unexamined. Drawing upon interviews with 35 CIPs in Australia and a comparison group of 35 Chinese professionals (CPs) in China, this thesis explored the influence of acculturation on CIPs’ effective leadership. CIPs’ acculturation experiences were found to shape their ethical views, respect for authority, participative leadership and voice behaviour. This thesis enriched our understanding of acculturation outcomes and advanced our knowledge of Chinese leadership in a western context.
