A Painter’s Encounter with Pre-Modern Artworks as Influences for a Contemporary Studio Practice

thesis
posted on 2019-06-10, 06:49 authored by LOUISE ANGELA BRENNAN
Written from a painter’s perspective, this thesis argues that certain pre-modern artworks exhibit characteristics that have a temporal dimension. These characteristics, often overlooked by conventional analysis, have the capacity to transmit to a contemporary art practice and are crucial for me as a maker. I draw on recent theories of temporality in art history to show how these characteristics can detach and cross to the present in a way that bears on my studio practice. Set in a subjective aesthetics, my experience of pre-modern artworks, including ancient ceramics and Quattrocento painting, involves four different levels of engagement: the contextualising of space; the sensate; the material; and the intellectual.
