They can be directly applied to solid/particulate matrices to test target analytes, which is unrealizable by conventional paper-based analytical devices (PADs). The CASs are combined with paper sensors to realize quantification of heavy metal ions. The CAS is also made a home-use device for diagnosis of blood total bilirubin in jaundiced neonates. This thesis also characterizes that CAS can address problems encountering in PADs, such as the indicator leaching, sample loss, and “coffee stain” effect to cause nonuniform colorimetric results on paper, etc.
