Sodium ion batteries are known as potentially cost effective for grid storage applications. However, organic solvents are commonly used as main electrolytes and this make the batteries unsafe. This thesis aims to produce a high energy density, safe sodium ion battery based on ionic liquid electrolytes. Solid electrolyte inter phase characterization studies are performed on the cathode and anode to understand the electrolyte side reactions in the batteries. A cost effective 3.3V sodium ion battery was demonstrated using a sodium vanadium phosphate cathode material, a bio-derived hard carbon anode material with an ionic liquid electrolyte.
