Investigation of STAT3 Serine Phosphorylation in Gastric Tumourigenesis BALICJESSE JAY 2018 Stomach cancer is a common worldwide health burden. It is aggressive and often diagnosed at a late stage. Currently, no blood test can detect this cancer and no curative treatment options are available. This thesis examined the role of a cancer causing protein called STAT3. It was discovered that this protein requires a special modification for its capacity to promote stomach inflammation and tumour growth. This study importantly defines a brand new therapeutic opportunity for the development of drugs that can target this modification, in the hopes to finally finding a cure for this lethal disease.
