FOLLETT, KAYE Everyday household practices: The flow of portable electronic devices A social practice theory informed by industrial ecology and circular economy concepts is used to understand the unsustainable electronic material flows through Australian households. The thesis argues that sustainability of electronic devices within households is a complex and interconnected process involving device-use in everyday household practices that support household day-to-day living. It also involves understanding how and why household practices inform device acquisition, retirement and divestment. Improvements in sustainability are, therefore, dependent on re-configuring everyday household practices whilst, at the same time, acknowledging household diversity and difference, ongoing contextual changes and ensuring social equity outcomes.
