Conducting Research in Local and Global Contexts: Discursive Identities of Vietnamese Scholars in Vietnam and the Diaspora HOANGCUONG HUU 2020 This study investigated Vietnamese social science scholars’ relationship with research. It found that senior scholars positioned themselves as wanting to contribute to the welfare of Vietnam while junior academics positioned themselves as both focusing on their career and helping the country. Junior academics, in particular, were found to negotiate a lack of collegiality and limited support from their institutions. An understanding of negotiation and agency of scholars from Vietnam, a developing country, has the potential to contribute to our understanding of research and what it entails.
