Current cancer treatments in the clinic include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy resulting in toxic side effects to normal tissue. The focus of this thesis was to develop novel targeted gold nanostructures that can efficiently kill only the tumour cells without harming the healthy cells. Through this research, tumour specific nanostructures that can be used to visualise a tumour and treat it has been designed and successfully tested in an animal model. These tumour targeted nanostructures have promising future in providing image guided treatment to cancer patients.
