Claude Monet's Grandes Décorations were his last and greatest works. How did Monet complete them? The scale is massive, so is the number of paintings. Monet was an old man, beset by infirmities that included bad eyesight and arthritis. Gone were the days when Monet set off to paint en plein air in all weathers. After the death of his wife Alice in 1911, Monet ceased to work, confiding to Rodin, that he felt ―lost, annihilated. Suddenly, in 1914, he began the Grandes Décorations.
