Catley, Bob The New Zealand 'brain drain' Since 1979 the relative economic performance of New Zealand has declined and there has been a net outflow of New Zealanders, mostly to Australia. This outflow intensified during the recession of the 1970s and 1980s and during the last two or three years. To offset it, New Zealand governments have increased the intake of migrants. This policy has not prevented further economic decline; indeed it may well have exacerbated it. Copyright.
